Grade 6 Holiday Programme
By Zodwa Mabusela (Senior Child and Youth Care Worker)
A holiday programme was conducted for 40 of the Grade 6 leaners of Silversands Primary School on the 28th and 29th of June. These children were selected by means of a selection questionnaire. They were then taken out for both those days to Monkey Town in Somerset West. A structured program was followed, with tea time at 10h00 and lunch at 12h30, finishing at 15h00. On the first day, we did our activities in the morning, then after lunch we took them for a tour in the monkey park to see all the different species that are there. The children enjoyed this tour. There were a few who were a bit scared of the baboons, but were safely guarded by the tour guide.
On the second day, we continued with our activities in the morning, and after lunch took them for a reptile park tour. Here they got to hold the biggest snake as the group and took pictures with the snake.
All the children enjoyed the outing and had lots of fun. There was more than enough food and snacks for them for both days. And at the end of each day, all children were taken by bus to their homes or to their bus stops closest to their homes. The programme was a great success.
